Yo-Yos! Where Have YOU Been?

Yo-Yos are still "in"!
If you think that little cylindrical thingy tied to a string that you played with as a kid was a passing fad, you've got some catching up to do. Click on Yo-yos right now and go read the Wikipedia article. Please look at the pictures, too. And read about the "1990's technological renaissance." This is a great reference source and not something that I plan to repeat here since it is quite a good article.
As a kid, I cannot tell you how many yo-yos I had. I loved yo-yos! They were simple, wooden things at the time. Absolutely nothing fancy. Half the time the cheap string would give out in no time at all. But let me tell you, my friends and I would be totally enthralled seeing how long we could keep yo-yos going. Sound familiar?
Yo-Yos through the years
Over the years they've gotten a bit fancier and I think they actually work better than in the "olden days." New materials such as aluminum along with design changes (think the ball-bearing style) make them spin longer....wayyyyyyyy longer and return much more proficiently. With the advent of the Internet, you can find some decent online instruction to learn tricks for beginners to a few more advanced ones. Honestly, there's an entire culture that has developed around the yo-yo.
In my way of thinking yo-yo's are just pure fun. Playing with them is exactly that -- PLAY. And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with playing no matter what age we might be. But the whole yo-yo scene can be a lot more than that. They have evolved for many into quite the hobby. For a few others, it's a full-time business thing. A surprising number have entered the fray as collectors.
Yo-yos are more than just TOYS
One of my friends even views the yo-yo with a more "life lesson" set of spectacles. Here's what she says about them: A yo-yo is symbolic of life with it ups and downs. Hey, that's beyond me somewhat, but I do get what she's talking about. Think about it!
So, if you think yo-yos are stuff of the past, THINK AGAIN. Yo-yos one little toys that I'm about convinced are here to stay!
